We assist when Animal Control lacks wildlife holding resources and partner with certified rehabilitators to ensure humane transition to proper care.

WILDLIFE

Wild animals are not pets, and even well-intentioned intervention can unintentionally cause harm or violate state and federal wildlife laws. In Connecticut, it is illegal for members of the public to possess, keep, raise, or treat most native wildlife without the proper state and federal rehabilitation licenses. Wildlife requires specialized medical care, nutrition, housing, and handling techniques that only trained and licensed rehabilitators are authorized to provide.

If an injured, orphaned, or distressed wild animal is found, it is critical to contact the Connecticut Department of Energy & Environmental Protection (DEEP) or a licensed wildlife rehabilitator immediately for guidance before attempting intervention. In many situations, improper handling, feeding, or prolonged possession by unlicensed individuals can worsen injuries, create unnecessary suffering, or reduce an animal’s chance of successful release back into the wild.

Advocacy for the Animals, Inc. works in conjunction with licensed wildlife rehabilitators to help ensure wildlife is transported safely and transferred into appropriate professional care as quickly as possible. Our role is to support lawful, humane, and responsible wildlife intervention while helping connect animals with the experienced professionals equipped to rehabilitate them properly.

We help community members and municipal pounds by getting wildlife to species specific licensed wildlife rehabilitators.

There are few licensed wildlife rehabilitators in the state that can take federally protected birds. We do our best to get them there quickly when they are injured.

One of these squirrels ran into a Cheshire resident arms. It must have been without it's mama for a long time. The other squirrel that was squawking at her on a nearby tree branch was lifted out of the branch by a hawk and dropped onto a roof. We went on the roof to get the squirrel and brought them both to a licensed rehab.
